Northeastern Thailand
Isan, as the northeast is known locally, is a treasure trove of historical and archaeological sites, several of which have been restored or excavated. Among them, Angkor-period Khmer ruins such as Prasat Phimai and Wat Phanomwan. And if you really want to go back in time, you can see prehistoric cave drawings at Ban Pheu and the remains of possibly the world’s oldest agricultural society at Ban Chiang. Northeastern people are famous for their distinctive folk traditions, food and music, not to mention their natural friendliness.
